CARING AND SHARING:  Outreach Ministries

MISSIONS OUTSIDE OF ST. PAUL’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Serving in the Community and World

 Overview

Foundations of Faith:  Discovering Balance As We Develop our Faith

We feel more balanced when we have a mixture of upward, inward, and outward focus in our lives which St. Paul’s often refers to as worship, knowing/growing, and caring/sharing.  We offer an ever-expanding variety of opportunities in each area.  Below are some of the “outward” opportunities for caring and sharing in our community and world.  We encourage everyone to find  places they can share with those around them.

CARING AND SHARING
in the Community and World

St. Paul’s offers many outreach ministries. Below are several we focus on.

Henri Dennis School, Monrovia, Liberia

This school for 600 students, ages five to twenty-two, has a regular curriculum, plus an agricultural program growing crops on the school’s five acres of land and rearing fish in its fish pond.  They operate on multiple shifts.  To find out more, call Alan Smith.

Our ministry to date includes:  $30,000 donated to build 9 new classrooms; Mission trip to Liberia by 10 St. Paul’s members in February 2006 – Broadcast on cablevision, available in church library; 5 computers; 200 boxes of new textbooks from local school districts; Adams High School Atlas Program donated $3,000; 200 school kits collected in Vacation Bible School and worship-Summer 2006.  We are making a difference - Keep those ideas coming!!!

Operation Class Room: You Can Help!
We will be collecting school supplies from September 10 to October 28 to send to the Henri Dennis School.  Below is a list of items the students and teachers need: 12” ruler, watercolors, pencil sharpener, crayons/24 count, pens-black/blue/red, protractor/compasses, small solar calculators, glue bottles/glue sticks, religious coloring books, portfolio pocket folders, teacher’s lesson plan books, teacher’s class record books, chalk & chalkboard erasers, Fiskars® scissors-Bunt/Pointed, markers (8-10 count) washable, markers-fine point/washable, pen erasers/pencil top erasers, and lined paper - wide and/or college ruled.

Harvest Festival:
Feed our Neighbors – Educate God’s Children

The first weekend in October is a time we celebrate and share our abundance of food and good fortune.  On Saturday night, come to the Hoe-Down for a fun evening of music and dancing.  Sunday worship services include glorious music and our sanctuary decorated with donated fruits, vegetables and flowers which are later delivered to local soup kitchens.  A special offering is taken to further our partnership with the Henri Dennis School.

Major Fundraiser

Habitat for Humanity International

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry which seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.  This helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness

St. Paul’s is one of 12 churches in the Rochester coalition which work together to fund and build homes.  Volunteers are needed for construction and many support roles.  To get involved, log on to www.habitat-oakland-mi.org or contact Hap Walton.

United Methodist Men’s (UMM)
Valentine Gourmet Dinner and Dance

Don’t miss this fabulous 6-course dinner totally prepared, paid for, and served by the UMM. Hickey Hall is transformed into an elegant ballroom full of surprises and fun for everyone complimented by outstanding musical entertainment and dancing. Come by yourself or with a date.  100% of the monies go to Habitat for Humanity.

Extras for Mission

During Lent, the congregation is encouraged to put aside 10% of all money they spend on “wants” (rather than “needs”) and donate it to help fund our next Habitat for Humanity home.

Red Bird Mission, Beverly, Kentucky

The Red Bird Mission
is part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference of the United Methodist Church, providing support for people in the Appalachian area of eastern Kentucky.  It includes a K-12 school for 250 students; a medical and dental clinic; outreach programs for infants, families, and the elderly; sponsorship of local crafters and a community store.  See the website:  www.rbmission.org

Contact Bob Conger for further information.

Adult Work Trip:
St. Paul’s Global Missions committee is sponsors its 7th annual Red Bird Adult Workcamp this fall, the week of October 22.  All are invited to come and experience this unique blend of fellowship and service.  The main focus is general repair of houses, such as rebuilding porches, replacing windows, and building wheelchair ramps.  We also help in the retail and craft stores, various outreach programs, and clip coupons.  During 2005, we started partnering with other local churches, which has greatly expanded our participation.  Contact the Church office, 248-651-9361, for further information.

You can help by going on the fall worktrip! And also by saving Campbell's Soups, General Mills, and Tyson Chicken labels and placing them in the designated containers at St. Paul’s.  These labels, collected by United Methodist Church’s across the nation, add up – they have been used to purchase vans and educational materials for the school.   Please help!

Major Fundraiser:  Each Easter, the Red Bird Mission Team prepares and serves a delicious Easter Breakfast in Hickey Hall.  Start your Easter with great food and great company – and all proceeds go to Red Bird Mission.

Rochester Area Neighborhood House

The Rochester Area Neighborhood House (RANH) was started by local churches in 1968.  It is now supported by 18 area churches, Rochester Rotary, Oakland Township United Way, local schools, grants, and donations from area businesses and other private sources.  It is the local referral center for social services in the Greater Rochester Area.  Services provided include emergency food, clothing, transportation, and financial assistance for utilities, rent, medical needs, and other expenses.  Financial and emotional counseling can be provided on a short-term basis.  Cancer resource information is also available.  For more information, contact Susan Vidican, Executive Director, or go to www.ranh.org.

Christmas Food Baskets: Each year, everyone in the congregation is invited to reach out to the community through the 100 plus Christmas Food Baskets that St. Paul’s prepares as part of Neighborhood House’s food basket ministry.  Choose between cash donations (to help St. Paul’s buy in bulk), helping fill the baskets, and/or delivering them to homes in the community.  This is a great project for groups or families to do together!  Contact:  Rill Maher

Baldwin Center, 212 Baldwin Avenue, Pontiac, Michigan

The Baldwin Center provides adult and family services which include a soup kitchen, counseling services, homeless breakfast and shower program, clothes closet, laundry services, holiday food distribution and holiday store program, pharmacy assistance, warming center, tutoring program, and a baby food/diaper program.  Thousands of persons benefit from Baldwin Ave.’s ministries that happen through the generosity of area churches and government agencies working together to meet human needs.  For more information, contact:  Nancy Almond

You can help:  St. Paul’s volunteers serve the noon meal on the 2nd Monday of each month, pick up food donated by local stores weekly; help prepare meals and more.  Recycled cell phones and print cartridges can be donated.  In addition, United Methodist Women collect contributions to purchase gloves and hats each Christmastime.

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)

St. Paul’s supports UMCOR through our apportionments.  In addition, personal donations may be made through St. Paul’s.
