St. Paul’s United Methodist Women Scholarship

St. Paul’s United Methodist Women offer two scholarships for women and youth members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.  One $250 educational scholarship will be available for higher education and one $250 camp scholarship will be available for summer camp.

To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must be a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and listed on the membership role and must have demonstrated service to the church or community.

The education scholarship may be used for higher education at an accredited institution, art or music study or college admission test preparatory course.  The education scholarship is available to female church members age 16 or older who have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

The camp scholarship may be used for Christian summer camp and is available to boys and girls up to the age of 18 who are members of St. Paul’s, or whose family are members of St. Paul’s if the child is younger than confirmation age.  The scholarship is not available for St. Paul’s youth work trip.

2012 Reading Program

The UMW Reading Program encourages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books.

It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and broaden your understanding of our mission work.

This year, the UMW has donated nine new books to the St. Paul’s UMC library.

Some of the titles include Beaded Hope, Change The World, Moral Ground, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, It’s Easier to Reach Heaven Than the End of the Street.

To participate, read at least 5 books from 5 different categories (Leadership Development, Education for Mission, Nurturing for Community, Social Action and Spiritual Growth) from the 2008-2012 reading lists found in the Library.

Regular reading of Response magazine, available in the Library, is also required.

Keep a record and submit a list to the Program Resource chair or your Circle chair by September 30th. Our UMW unit receives credit with the national UMW for each participant.

The UMW Shelf is located on the left as you walk into the Library from the main hallway. The bookcase is marked “Reference and Rare,” books. The UMW shelf is just below eye level.

Many people ask, “Does everything sell at the rummage sale?”, or, “Where does everything go after the sale?” In addition to the money raised ($13,500+ in May 2011), here is a list of items that were donated to various groups:

  • Neighborhood House – sheets, towels, blankets, backpacks
  • Baldwin Avenue – men's jeans, pants, shorts, personal care items
  • Friendship House, Macomb – small items for bingo prizes
  • Leader Dog – eye glasses
  • Brookwood "Make a Difference Day" – items from Collectibles (after the sale)
  • Golden Retriever Rescue group – items from Collectibles (after the sale)
  • Michigan Veterans Foundation – men's clothing (after the sale)
  • Humane Society – old blankets and towels (things that would have gone in the free box)
  • St. Paul's Preschool – file cabinet, office chair
  • Rochester Rocket Readers – books for preschoolers
  • Detroit Rescue Mission – craft items (after the sale)
  • Riding program for special needs children – an English saddle
  • Ugly bags program (for the homeless) – ties and material
  • Salvation Army – all the rest of the things that were left after the sale, two large trucks almost full.

The Detroit Rescue Mission also came in Thursday before the sale to purchase men's clothing, towels, sheets and other items that are in need at their facility.

GLOVES & HATS FOR BALDWIN CENTER

The United Methodist Women are once again purchasing gloves and hats.

Your contribution can keep someone warm!  Please mark your envelope or check "UMW Gloves."

For more information, contact Jan Harris (get her contact information from the Church office).

United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to:

  • Know God and to experience freedom as whole people through Jesus Christ
  • Develop a creative, supportive fellowship
  • Expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church

Membership is open to any woman who desires to belong and participate in the global mission of the church through prayer, giving, and service.

General Meetings are held five times a year, alternating between daytime and evening.

Circles

Circles provide a great way to get to know a smaller group of UMW women. The monthly meetings generally feature a short program, discussion, and social time. The circles also work together to support the UMW in hostessing general meetings and working on UMW mission projects. All women are encouraged to visit the circles and find one that fits their needs.

Charity Circle (Members-at-Large): There are no monthly meetings, but these women attend general meetings and participate in fund raisers and other UMW events.

Faith Circle: This group meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the parlor. Varied and interesting programs for all ages.

Love Circle: Meets the 2nd Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the church Parlor. Programs are aimed at interests of both career women and homemakers.

New Hope Circle: Meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in members’ homes. Working women, homemakers and lively retirees alike will find this a great place for fellowship.

Patience Circle: Meets the 2nd Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Parlor. Babysitting is provided for all meetings. With a mixture of age groups and varied programs and speakers, there is something for everyone.

Missions

The UMW is very active in raising funds for missions through its Holiday Cookie Walk, “Cinn” Sundays, bi-annual Markets for Mission (rummage sales), and lots more.

Our May 2009 Market for Mission was a great success! Check out these photos, courtesy of Michelle Kouri ...
