EMBLEM

The emblem for the United Methodist Church combines the Cross and a Flame, symbolizing the Holy Spirit.

The Cross and Flame are the ancient symbols of the Church, dating back to the days of Christ and Pentecost.  Each evokes images of sacrifice, witness, and service obligations of discipleship.

The shape of the emblem is likewise symbolic.  It is fluid and free flowing, suggesting change and mobility.

The Cross, the Flame -- the individual with her abilities and opportunities -- all are elements of a 21st century movement for United Methodist Women.

PURPOSE

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose "Purpose" is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the Church.

GOALS

To help women in a more personal and deeper walk in their Christian life and with others.

To expand our membership by encouraging involvement in our programs and studies, which are relevant to our unit and cross sections of our women and to their total church involvement.

To increase variety of subgroups.  to maintain the high quality and creativity of our programs.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and participate in the global mission of the church through prayer, giving, and service.

The United Methodist Women in our local Church is directly related to the district and conference organization of United Methodist Women and to the Women's division of the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

Contact:  UMW President Joan Swanson (get her phone number from the Church office).

CIRCLES

Circles provide a great way to get to know a smaller group of women.  Monthly meetings generally feature a short program, discussion, and social time.  The circles also support the UMW in hostessing meetings and working on UMW projects.  All women are encouraged to visit the circles and find one that fits their needs.

Charity Circle (Members-at-Large):  There are no monthly meetings, but these women attend general meetings and participate in fund-raisers and other UMW events.  Women interested in joining may contact Sylvia Anderson or Sharon Schaeffer (get their phone numbers from the church office).

Faith Circle:  This group meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the Parlor, offering varied and interesting programs for all ages.  Call Chairperson Sandee Heath for more information (get her phone number from the church office).

Love Circle:  Meets the 2nd Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in members’ homes.  Programs are aimed at interests of both career women and homemakers.  Love Circle supports the Food Pantry with monthly donations of paper products.  Contact:  Ruth Kelsey (get her phone number from the church office).

New Hope Circle:  Meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in members’ homes.  Working women and stay-at-home moms alike will find this a great place for fellowship.  Contacts:  Robyn Kelly (get her phone number from the church office).

Patience Circle:  Meets the 2nd Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the Parlor.  Child care is provided for all meetings.  With a mixture of age groups and varied programs and speakers, there is something for everyone.  Contact:  Donna Stenton (get her phone number from the church office).

READING PROGRAM

St. Paul’s UMW participates in a reading program to encourage women to read a variety of books in four categories:  Education for Mission, Spiritual Growth, Social Action, and Nurturing for Community.  Books are selected by The Women’s Division of the General Board of Ministry for the United Methodist Church.  Many are available in our church library.  For further information on participating in this program, call Kathy Lutey (248-375-0958).

MISSIONS

The UMW is very active in raising funds for missions through its Cinn Sundays (cinnamon roll sales), bi-annual Rummage Sale, and lots more.  For further information, contact UMW President Joan Swanson (get her phone number from the church office).
