HUGS 2019-2020: Pray, Prepare, Serve & Repeat!

H.U.G.S. is a multi-generational Mom’s group.  H.U.G.S. is shorthand for Humor, Understanding, Growth and Support/Sharing/Spirituality.  We meet Wednesday mornings in room 132 at St. Paul’s from 9:30 – 11:15 unless otherwise noted.  Childcare is provided at no charge.  Please call ahead so we can have sufficient childcare providers each week: Childcare Reservations: (248) 651-9361, ext. 114.  Our classes are designed for busy women on the go, so there is little homework, but always great discussions!  Even when we schedule a multi-week series, each week runs independently of the others, so you can join when you can without feeling like you are missing something.

The call to action this year is from Romans 12:11-13:  “Never let the fire in your heart go out. Keep it alive. Serve the Lord. When you hope, be joyful. When you suffer, be patient. When you pray, be faithful. Share with God’s people who are in need. Welcome others into your homes.”  Sound familiar?  This embodies what the women of HUGS strive to do.  Let’s investigate how we can let God’s fire transform us.  We’ll deepen our prayer life, delve into what Christian joy provides us, even in our darkest days, prepare to serve, serve some more, and embrace the Christ-like care we administer to others.  This year we will find ways to keep ourselves fueled and alert for ways to serve all people, intentionally and faithfully.  In sum, we will pray, prepare, serve and repeat, circling back to serve our families, the community, and the greater world.  We’ll tap into the zeal we feel when we’re fulfilling the mission God called us to do.  New this year:  a monthly call to mission.  If we don’t have all the details in the Evangel, check our FaceBook page or email Sue Evans at suecamevans@yahoo.com.  We hope you will join us!

If the Rochester Schools are closed for weather-related reasons, HUGS is cancelled as well.

JANUARY

HUGS Monthly mission:  Replenshing the Food Pantry for the Neighborhood House.  They’re always depleted after the holiday season.  So we’ll check the web site and see what they need to replenish their supplies.  We’ll collect items each week in January and bring them to the Neighborhood House.

8  MUGS & HUGS at the Grand Traverse Pie Company (the Upper Crust – aka the upstairs room) – next to Papa Joe’s (6920 N. Rochester Road 248-438-5110).  The school-age set is likely basking in the afterglow of a great Christmas break but exhausted from all the merriment.  So let’s plan on meeting up for casual conversation and well-deserved rest and relaxation at Grand Traverse Pie Company!  Let’s arrive at 10:00 and staying til 11:30.  This is a family friendly location, so please feel free to bring the infant/toddler set along this morning!

15  Hoodwinked by Karen Ehman & Ruth Schwenk –10 Myths Moms Believe & Why We All Need to Knock It Off.  We’ll start the new year off with maximum positivity!  This is a 6 week study.  Let’s replace the 10 modern myths of motherhood with the biblical truth of motherhood provided by God.  We’ll acquire some practical tools to replace the misperceptions with new, healthy behaviors and help forge supportive relationships with other moms of all ages and stages.  Although you are welcome to purchase their book and read along with us, we’ll do the work and give you the scoop and show video clips to get the conversations rolling.

“First” Wednesday LUNCH BUNCH on the 3rd Wednesday: 11:30-12:30.  This month, we switch it up and declare the third Wednesday of the month as our Lunch Bunch.  If you can linger, bring an ingredient to include in a salad and extend our fellowship through lunch.  For the toddler/preschool set, feel free to bring your little guys in with us as we linger over conversation and lunch.

22  Beat the Winter Blues – You survived the chaos of the Christmas season, but the winter is still young.  Rochester Schools have a ½ day for the older kiddos, so let’s take a moment to catch our breath, check in with each other and gear up for snowy days ahead.  Feel free to bring a snack as we enjoy fellowship time with each other.

29 Hoodwinked 10 Myths Moms Believe & Why We All Need to Knock It Off. We’ll continue with week two of the study.  Each week runs independently, so you can come as your schedule allows!

FEBRUARY

HUGS Monthly mission:  Sending love packages to St. Paul’s homebound members.  We’ll have the kiddos make pictures and collect items to include in care packages for St. Paul’s members who are homebound.  Check our Facebook page for items we are collecting or email Sue Evans at suecamevans@yahoo.com.
